How Misfit Farms Sprouted During the Pandemic
In 2020, the world shifted overnight. With the onset of COVID-19 lockdowns, supply chain disruptions left many of us scrambling for solutions to problems we hadn’t foreseen. For us at Misfit Farms, the challenges became an opportunity to make a lasting impact. Our mission was simple: to create healthy, organic alternatives to support food growth, even during uncertain times. And so, Misfit Farms was born, inspired by a blend of necessity, curiosity, and an unshakable commitment to sustainability.
The Birth of an Idea: Composting Worms and Isopod Frass
As the pandemic shed light on vulnerabilities in food supply systems, we knew we wanted to focus on the root—quite literally. Healthy soil is the foundation of robust, nutrient-rich plants, and we realized that harnessing natural inputs like composting worms, isopod frass, diatomaceous earth, and agricultural lime could transform soil health. These ingredients, all organic and sustainable, became the cornerstone of our journey.
We started small, experimenting with composting worms and isopods. By feeding them organic fruits, veggies, and specially formulated chow, we ensured the purity of our materials from the ground up. This commitment to organic practices wasn’t just a goal—it was a standard we refused to compromise on.
The Creation of Agri-Armor
From those early efforts, we developed a unique product we called Agri Armor. This innovative blend combined worm castings, isopod frass, diatomaceous earth, and agricultural lime to create a soil amendment that could revolutionize plant growth. But like any bold idea, it needed testing.
We set up four test beds to evaluate Agri Armor’s effectiveness:
- Control Bed: No product applied.
- 10% Product Bed: Soil treated with 10% Agri Armor.
- 15% Product Bed: Soil treated with 15% Agri Armor.
- 20% Product Bed: Soil treated with 20% Agri Armor.
The results were astounding. All treated beds showed substantial growth, with plants in the 15% Product Bed achieving up to 15% more growth compared to the control. Interestingly, increasing the application rate to 20% yielded little additional benefit, proving that 15% was the sweet spot for maximum impact.
Perfecting the Process
Over the past four years, we’ve refined Agri Armor to ensure consistent quality and efficacy. By raising and breeding our own composting worms and isopods, we’ve gained complete control over the production process. Every worm casting and every gram of isopod frass comes from creatures fed a carefully curated organic diet. This meticulous approach guarantees that Agri Armor remains a 100% organic and sustainable product.
